In all honesty (and be brutally honest, gang.), how long would it take you and your family to "bug out" , with all your necessaries, if the worst happened and you had to vacate the carefully prepared, disaster ready homestead you've built up, for whatever reason, be it fire, flood, or zombie invasion?

Poll included for sure silliness.

It would take me 30 minute, not because I forgot to pack anything, but because it takes a little while to strap those things onto the motorcycles.

Peace,
Caliann

Depends on the so called emergency. If I absolutely have to leave with the only alternative being death I can be gone in ten minutes. Ten minutes is longer than most think

I keep all my necessary items in known spots. SO gathering them up would take little time.

So I voted 10 minutes.

We've bugged out due to flooding several times. The essentials are the kids, all the rest is fluff. (Granted, the pets are pretty important fluff, but fluff all the same.) That said, we generally have some idea when we're about to GET flooded, and take several hours to put stuff up, or otherwise prepare as possible. And for a zombie invasion, I can't think of anywhere I'd rather be, so yeah, I expect we'll stay right here. :-D On the other hand, if it's a tornado, 10 minutes is about all the warning you're likely to get, and that's IF you're lucky. We're lucky enough not to get many earthquakes here--I guess we'd need a poll for how long we'd sift through the rubble?

Best to all!

Mentioned it before, but I maintain lists of things to load up, depending on how much time there is.

My main work van is a one ton and pretty well outfitted to survive 'bout anything right off the bat with tools, a gun or two, camping essentials and ready to eat stuff.

I back up my work documents and keep them on a flash drive in my pants pocket so all I need to keep my businesses afloat is a computer, assuming there isn't time to pack up the laptop.

Other than that, all I need is my fire safe and I have everything I need to go in under five minutes.

Another five minutes and I could hook up my horse trailer and have 300 gallons of gas, three generators, two chainsaws and all the stuff to keep them serviced.

I think the lists are most important though, because if family or friends can help me to evacuate and they readily know what goes and what stays, what's important and what's not, the evacuation is half completed.

I ain't going anywhere with a backpack, and it would have to be pretty dire circumstances to force me to leave anyway.

It would take several hours,of course the most likely event here is a hurricane where we have several days of warning.

I used to be much more prepared, now a lot of it is scattered between here and NC...not a good way to be really.

I have a rifle HERE in SC but most of the ammo is in NC...doesn't really make much sense except leaving a rifle up there for months at a time seems like tempting fate.

We also have most of our food stock here except for some canned goods and a couple of cases of MREs in NC.

The biggest problem really for us is trying to leave, there are two roads out of town, one is across a 1/4 mile long bridge that can be easily closed and the other is by the military base...
In a SHTF event I think there would be a lockdown here....

My biggest bug out concern is the gas plant 5 miles up-wind from here.
It separates the hydrogen sulphide (H2S) from the sour gas. If it were ever to get away from them it would be real bad.
In that case me and kitty would be out in 10 min. :yikes:

I'd have to hurry to BUG OUT in 10 minutes. I'd reather have four or five hours. My van is already loaded with the things that are not too cold or heat sensitive. I have 24 containers just inside the side door of my house, 15 - 20 minutes to load them, and much more that I would like to take.

I do think it would be situational.....

Hhmm, as tinda mentioned, Chemical Plant say, exploding, and spreading tri-methyl death through the air? Kids, critters and us...GONE...10 minutes. Luckily, right now, the critters are easy to catch and load.

But, I wouldn't NEED a lot of stuff then, because a chemical cloud from something like that would disperse in no more than a day...shorter time span if there is a strong wind, and I could come back to get my stuff.

Something like the Invasive Army of Aliens advancing, well, armies of any kind take time to advance, and therefore I would have time to strip my household of just about everything, get it loaded up, and get gone before our new insectoid overlords got their feelers within range.

Peace,
Caliann

I'm probably about as safe here as anywhere else, unless there is a forest fire. And I really don't know what would I do with my animals if I didn't have enough warning to get help from the county to move them all.

To be honest, I read the other posts before I voated. If I get to come back to all my stuff in a couple days, I can be long gone in ten minutes. If I'm leaving for good, give me an hour.

It would depend on how "urgent" the situation was and if I were ever comming back as well. Anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour.

:wink5: POST #1 I just signed up because I followed neighboring state here from another board. My state, although fictional, is very real to those of us who live here. I do not have to worry about bugging out, I am in my bug out. All preps are stashed and all folk in my family are ready to do whatever or to who ever shows up after the big collapse of the time. I have been preaching the collapse of the US for over 40 years and see us as on the slippery slope and having past the point of no return. It is happening as we speak. I am not sure I really want to survive in the world that is coming; but I will give it my best shot. Any way, glad to be aboard, hope to talk to all of you as time goes on.

Welcome aboard, jefferson!

I have been pondering possible societal/governmental/civilizational collapse lately and I am beginning to wonder if we truly are going to go down.

My thoughts are that we passed the point of no return, but the masses were too apathetic to notice it.

In all seriousness, from what I have observed over the last 20 years, it would take more than a fascist government to stir the masses into revolution. It also, as we have seen, will take more than economic collapse. The Constitution has been chewed upon for over a decade now, and the masses haven't really noticed. We are IN a depression, with the elite class being handed money mouth-over-fist while the poorer classes struggle to put food on the table....and no mention of uprising. Not even a grumble, really.

So, revolution is unlikely to happen unless something extreme comes along, like China invading us or something along those lines. China is enjoying having us in debt to them too much to invade us, so that possibility is highly unlikely.

Therefore, natural disaster. I don't know if that will cause a full collapse and, if it does, it would be a world-wide, super event. Say, if Yellowstone blows its top.....well, a good bit of the Midwest will be ~dead~. In 5 weeks time, the East coast will have lost most of its population, the West coast will have about half of its population, the Southern states will likely only have much trouble in the large cities, as a lot of the food production comes out of the South.

The fallout from it will have world-wide effects, though, and climate change will be drastic.

However, communication being what it is now, after the initial population depletion, what is left will easily be able to rebuild, as resources will be easy to find at that point. 2+ billion people trying to get resources together from a collapsed society is far easier than 6+ billion people competing for resources in a strained society.

The biggest deal is going to be surviving the first 3 months. If one can do that, the rest will be much easier.

Peace,
Caliann
